Shure SM7B

Shure SM7B – cardioid dynamic microphone, a long-standing industry standard for vocal recording, podcasting, and radio production. The dynamic capsule's flat, wide-range response of 50 Hz to 20,000 Hz stays uniform with frequency and symmetrical about the axis, giving maximum rejection of off-axis sound with minimal tonal coloration. A built-in humbucking coil, together with additional shielding, cuts electromagnetic interference generated by computer monitors, fluorescent lights, and other electrical devices in the recording room. Low -59 dBV/Pa sensitivity, however, calls for a preamp with at least +60 dB of clean gain in reserve, or an inline booster, when working with a typical audio interface.

Shielding against electromagnetic interference

The humbucking coil and additional electronic shielding cut mains hum and RF interference down to just 11 dB at 60 Hz, which matters directly in home studios set up close to computers, Wi-Fi routers, and other sources of electromagnetic radiation. This trait sets the SM7B apart from many condenser microphones, which under similar conditions need extra shielded cabling or physical separation from electronic gear.

Switchable response without changing microphones

Two rear-panel switches - bass rolloff and mid-range presence boost - tailor the frequency response to a specific source without reaching for another microphone: a podcast vocal, a guitar cab, a hi-hat, or a radio announcer each call for different settings on the same transducer. Internal air-suspension shock isolation and a dual-layer windscreen setup (the standard one plus the included A7WS for close-up work) eliminate handling noise and plosives without an external pop filter.
